When I met Jordan, I knew that my life was about to change in more ways than one – sure, I had a new boyfriend (who’s now my HUBBIE OW OW 😍) but I also had a new FUR BABY, HAZEL!!! A few years later, God dropped Lola into our laps (right off the streets, shattered pelvis and all!) and now we are one big, furry, happy, sometimes muddy, stinky, and shedding family – ok hopefully the last ones just apply to the dogs lol! Thanks to these puppers we have had a crash course in learning all the things a dog owner should know!
But seriously, having pets and keeping a house clean is no laughing matter. Two dogs and a small house keeps us on our toes, ya feel?! PLUS, we want to make sure that they’re always as safe as possible – ain’t nothin gonna hurt our babies!
We’ve learned a lot about being better dog owners over the last year or so and are ready to share our top tips! I hope they are helpful for taking care of your own fur baby!
5 Things Every Dog Owner Should Know
1.DOG CAMERA
Jordan and I travel for work a lot, so we loooove having a dog camera to keep us in touch with the kids 🐾 It makes me feel better to see that they aren’t getting into too much trouble (of course we have a dog sitter for them, too!) but I also love that it’s two way audio!! We can talk to them and they can bark back and it’s SO CUTE.
2. CLEAN YOUR PAWS
We’ve had to put some measures in place to make sure that the paw prints stay OUTside. We have this dog foot washer to keep’m clean. Of course, sometimes the girls get a little ahead of us and track mud everywhereeee. I just grab my Clorox® Clean-Up® Cleaner + Bleach spray, some paper towels, and wipe everything up. EASY PEASY!
3. ANTI-SPILL WATER BOWLS
When we first moved in, I knew we had to do something about the water bowl situation because I didn’t want our new wood floors to get ruined! We found an anti-spill dog water bowl and that’s solved the problem.
4. DOGGY SCHOOL BRAIN TOYS
Our girls love to playyy, so we try to keep them occupied with toys when we’re out of the house. They like a fun challenge, so we get these dog brain toys to help keep their doggy minds stimulated! I like to use Clorox® Regular Bleach₂ to clean their toys, too – especially because if we take them to the park to play with other pups, we don’t want our toys to be spreading any viruses! Wash pet-loved toys by soaking or wiping them with a bleach solution made up of ½ cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Wait 5 minutes before rinsing. Air dry.
5. KEEP PANTRY DOORS AND KITCHEN CABINETS CLOSED
If Hazel loves one thing, it’s an open pantry door. The temptation is just TOO STRONG. If we leave the doors to the pantry and trash open, she will only be able to resist for so long. We just make a habit to close them before we leave the house now, but occasionally we forget and she eats enough beef jerky to give herself a tummy ache!
If she gets sick, I always make sure to use a bleach-based cleaner like Clorox® Clean-Up® Cleaner + Bleach to clean and disinfect everything. This spray protects against Canine Distemper virus and Canine Parvovirus, eliminates pet stains, and destroys 99% of pet allergens. It’s REALLY important to consistently disinfect because harmful germs and viruses can spread super easily!
There ya have it folks, our top tips that every dog owner should know! Even though I’ve picked up some helpful tricks along the way, the dogs are always finding new ways to make a mess 🤪.
