First, go through your inventory!
- Purge. If you haven’t worn it for a year, it’s time to find your inner N’Sync and say bye bye bye.
- Keep. Hold on to basics like neutral T’s and tanks that are classic and great layering pieces.
- Donate. Anything that still has life can be easily given to a charity of your choice. I donated mine to the Salvation Army and Goodwill.
Next, you gotta figure out what your goal is. For me, I wanted to have a year’s worth of clothing visible in one space—meaning I could see my entire wardrobe, which makes it a HECK of a lot easier to decide what to wear. I also wanted my closet to be pretty (duh!), personal, inspirational and functional (That’s not too much to ask, right?).
Now that you’ve kept only the essentials (and maybe a little extra because, hey, ya never know when you might need that sparkly jacket!) Here are ten tips to closet organization that will last through the seasons and all the fashion trends in between!
THIRTEEN CLOSET ORGANIZATION TIPS BELOW!
TIP 01 | KEEP YOUR TOP SHELF IN CHECK
1.Most closets end up with unused space near the ceiling…but all that space could go to good use with strategically placed shelving and a handy step stool. Store seasonal items there or pieces that you don’t use as frequently.
TIP 02 | TRY WICKER BASKETS AND HAT BOXES
1A sure fire way to have a messy-looking closet is by leaving out all the little accessories. Instead, invest in some cute storage baskets to hide small things. They look super cute and polished on open shelving, plus it keeps your space neat and organized.
TIP 03 | HANG STRATEGICALLY
1.Believe it or not, there is a rhyme and reason for strategic hanging of clothing in a closet. Shorter pieces, like tops and skirts can easily go above built in shelves, while longer pieces like pants and full length dresses should have ample room to hang without being bunched at the bottom.
TIP 04 | VELVET HANGERS
1.Huggable velvet hangers are super affordable, these bad boys do double duty of keeping tops from falling off the hangar, as well as looking oh-so-chic and professional. They’re also a bit more rounded at the corners, so you don’t end up with those—gasp!—bulging shoulder marks on your tops.
TIP 05 | SWAP OUT SEASONAL ITEMS
1.Why take up precious space with things you won’t use for months? Store your off-season items, like swimsuits or winter sweaters in another place for the time being. Swap them out when it’s time to bring them back to life!
TIP 06 | FULL LENGTH MIRROR
1.A full length mirror is an essential part of any girl’s closet. Not only does it work wonders for opening up your space visually, but it allows you to see your full outfit from head to toe. Get a formal one to prop against the floor, or an inexpensive version to hang on the back of the closet door.
2. Can see your whole outfit. Yaaas girl you look cute!
TIP 07 | BUY SHELVES BUILT TO LOOK LIKE BUILT IN SHELVES
1.Create extra space by using built in shelves. No one can deny that built-ins are so chic and give an air of richness to any space, but I’m here to tell ya that you can get the same look for much less. With the right placement and design, they look just as luxurious.
TIP 08 | A WOODEN BASKET FOR SANDALS AND SNEAKS.
1.You know those shoes that you don’t care about thaaat much? For me, my water shoes, hiking boots, idk – just shoes I wear like once a year. I threw those in a bin in the corner of my closet instead of displaying them.
TIP 09 | FOLD T-SHIRTS TO MAXIMIZE SPACE
1. No need to hang all of your Tees. Instead, do a crisp fold that keeps them neat and aligned in a folded stack. This is a major space saver! Expandable drawer organizers are great for sectioning off different items. This has seriously been a real game changer for me.
TIP 10 | UNDERWEAR DRAWER ORGANIZERS
1.This is my favorite part of my closet–my compartment drawer organizer is the best. I know, it’s easy to ball up all those undies and shove them into a drawer. But it’s so much nicer to see what you’re working with in the morning and choose the right pair for your outfit.
TIP 11 | ADD A DRESSER + MIRROR
1.If you have a walk-in closet, consider moving your dresser inside — and propping an oversized mirror on top. It’ll turn the closet into a full-blown station to get ready each morning, with everything within arm’s reach, and open up your bedroom space.
2.Mirror next to jewelry being able to see what you’re trying without having to move around so much
TIP 12 | STACKABLE ORGANIZERS FOR STATEMENT JEWELRY
1.Use divided organizing trays to stack larger jewelry pieces
TIP 13 | ZIG ZAG TRAYS ROCK.
1.I LOVE a zig-zag tray for organizing earrings, I found this one at my local Container Store, but found a similar organizer online. It’s a cute and modern alternative to a large jewelry box, and also makes it easy to see what you’ve got. No more losing those designer earrings you scored on Poshmark, or saying “OMG I forgot I even had these!”
Huge thank you to the Neat Method squad for helping me organize my new home in a functional way, and helping me create these closet organization tips! I am so grateful for your time and effort! And The Container Store for having the best supplies to get my life in order!
