When I shared my experience with hair loss with y’all, I found out that SO many women are walking the same journey, and now I am so determined to share all of my findings with you guys. Especially answering all the questions about my girls (AKA my wigs)!
I have been trying SO many different things to grow a healthy head of hair again, from supplements to yoga, and after some time I’ve figured out what’s working for me.
BUT I also wanted to share about my GIRLS – my wigs! They are just as huge a part of this as the regrowth! And guys – I honestly didn’t know how much there was to learn! I’m still finding out more and more every day, but for now, here are some of the answers to FAQs I get from you guys about my wig process.
1. DIFFERENT TYPES – Synthetic v Human hair

There are two types of wigs: synthetic hair and human hair.
Human hair pros: they look very natural, you can style them howeva, wheneva, and they last longer.
Cons: they will respond to the environment (just like anyone’s hair would, helloooo humidity 👋 ) and they are pricier.
I have played around with both a lot, and so far I definitely prefer my human hair wigs, but it’s really fun to play around with colored synthetic wigs, too! It’s really all about what you’re looking for.
Synthetic hair pros: your color is permanent, the style is permanent, and they’re pretty low maintenance. They’re also much more affordable! You can get several from Amazon for under $50!
Cons: you can’t really change them as you could real hair, they tangle pretty quickly, they can be really itchy and uncomfortable, and they are hotter than human hair.
You can still cut and style your synthetic wig how you want it. My good friend Briana helped me transform drab Amazon wigs to be super chic.
2. HIGH END VS LOW END
You can find wigs at all different price points, but to a degree, you get what you pay for. Here’s what I’ve found so far:
LOW END
Amazon can go either way. They can be some of the cheapest options, but sometimes they’re not great quality. But sometimes they’re great, so it’s just hit or miss.

MID TO HIGH END
Freedom Culture, Eva Wigs, and Jon Renau all have wigs that can range from around $150 all the way up to the $1,000+ mark. There is so much variety throughout, and the quality is great. I tend to shoot for the mid-range.
3. WRAP IT UP

These hair wraps are one of my absolute FAVE things. I just pop one around my little natural hair wrap and it makes me feel supa cute and supa natural. They’re perfect for more casual days, and they’re $25 each, so a super approachable price point. Even if you’re not experiencing hair loss, if you just wanna add a lil more volume to your messy buns, this is a super fast and easy way to do it! 4. SECURING YOUR WIG

This is one of the most common questions I get – how do you keep it on?!
- VELVET WIG GRIP! I actually don’t always use a wig cap – if you want to it does help to keep it all in place, but it just depends on how much hair you have. Instead, I use a velvet wig grip! It’s so much easier and comfier. I just put the grip on (just like you would a hairband), and then pin the rest of my hair up.
- MESH BABY! Then I just use the mesh inside of the wig to secure the wig to my head with clips or bobby pins. The head wrap usually comes with your wig purchase but this is what it looks like.
BAM BABY! That’s pretty much it!
5. MAINTENANCE.
I have learned to wash my wigs once a week or so – you don’t have to wash them as often as natural hair. After my struggle with trying to brush my wet wig (go watch my wig life highlight if you wanna see the struggglleeee lol)
For washing your wig, you will always want to have your wig right-side-out and reight-side-up (some will tell you to hang it upside down) on a wig stand. This will be the best way for the wig and cap to dry. It will allow for the cap to dry without stretching and allow air to move through it properly.
I found out from my friend Kate Ruddell that you gotta let wigs air dry. THEN you brush them with a wet brush and can style from there!
6. There is a heck of a lot of wig terminology guys.
It’s like a whole other language, I swear! Here are some terms I have learned and their definitions:
Lace or Lace front: A lace wig or a lace front wig is a special type of hairpiece or wig in which human hair or synthetic hair is tied by hand to a sheer lace base which goes over the scalp.
Pre-plucked: Wigs that have a natural-looking, plucked hairline.
Density percentage: “Density is defined as how thick or thin the hair on your lace wig will be. The standard and most popular choice is 120% which is Medium Thick Density. The average human head is considered to be between 100%-120%,” according to SassySecret.com.
7. Have fun with it!!
At first, this all felt so daunting to me, and sometimes it still does. But you know what? I feel like this journey has not only made me stronger but also more FUN! 🤪 Like, who else gets to have pink hair one day and back to blonde the next?! 💇♀️ Who else has WIG PARTIES with their girls 💃 and gets to embrace something new like this every day?
